History

Scouting began in 1907 with plenty of documentation on Baden Powell, Brownsea Island and Gilwell. Scout Groups were first formerly registered in 1909. 1st Molesey along with other groups in the Esher District such as The Dittons and Claygate were in this first year.

Records show that 1st Molesey was started by a band of youths, probably meeting quite informally at unknown locations associated with St Mary’s Church. The first Scoutmaster was Wilfred Gunn and a number of photographs exist in the group’s archives of these early years, some of which can be seen below. Our old bank records show us being called “1st Molesey BP Scouts”.

In 1936 the the Group took a license on a piece of land forming part of the Metropolitan Water Boards Lambeth Pumping Station adjacent to the River Thames. A Sea Scout section was formed prior to which we were land Scouts. The current hut in Walton Road was built in 1982 with land purchased from East and West Molesey Urban District Council.

If you are a former member of the group, we would be very pleased to hear from you! Please get in contact with us.
